LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Latest on winter weather in the South (all times local):

4:50 p.m.

West Virginia authorities say a woman was found dead in a car that sunk in floodwaters.

Sheriff Steve Stephens tells TheNewsCenter-TV in Parkersburg the vehicle apparently was traveling on a road in the Ohio River Valley, went through high water and was swept into Laurel Creek.

Stephens says there were no signs of a crash. Emergency personnel were searching the creek in case someone else was in the vehicle.

3:50 p.m.

A tractor-trailer has overturned after crashing on an icy highway in Mississippi.

News reports say the crash occurred Friday on southbound Interstate 55 in Tate County.

The crash was slowing southbound traffic. State transportation officials say the left southbound lane is blocked as the wreck is cleaned up.

Winter weather was moving over the South on Friday with Kentucky and Tennessee being coated in sleet and ice.

Tens of thousands of people in northern Alabama are getting the day off because of the possibility of icy weather.

More than 15 school systems in the state's Tennessee Valley region shut down Friday as forecasters warned of the possibility of ice, sleet and snow that could coat roads.

Four universities also closed, and the Army's massive Redstone Arsenal complex at Huntsville is dismissing workers early. Several counties are closing their offices for the day.

Winter weather was moving into the South early Friday with Kentucky and Tennessee being coated in sleet and ice.

8:10 a.m.

A wintry blast coated parts of Kentucky and Tennessee with sleet and ice early Friday, forcing schools to close. Meanwhile, parts of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama braced for another round of winter weather.

Winter conditions made for hazardous driving conditions in Tennessee and Kentucky. Forecasters predicted the storm would deliver a second punch later in the day with several inches of snow in some areas.

The winter storm prompted Kentucky House and Senate leaders to call off Friday's legislative session.

In central Louisiana Friday morning, forecasters said parts of the state could get slick as rain was expected to slowly transition to freezing rain or a sleet and snow mix.

In Mississippi, a light wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain was possible in the state's northern counties through early Friday afternoon.
